Usually depicted with a cat, a dog and a mouse eating peacefully from the same bowl, Saint Martin de Porres was a Dominican monk who loved and cared for all creatures that came to his mission. Born in Lima Peru to a mixed race family in the mid-16th century, he is the first black saint of the Americas, and is considered a patron saint of racial harmony and social justice.  He is also the unofficial patron saint of veterinarians.
